Miller is an unranked enlisted sailor aboard the USS Nathan James. He is assumed to be a Seaman Recruit, which is an unranked rate for those at sea. He is a very easygoing yet green sailor who is anxious to do a good job.Miller is seen as part of the prayer vigil for sailors' loved ones, after they all learned about the virus and Dr. Racel Scott's true reason for being on the ship. He tells the group that he is from Iowa and that he is praying that his mother, Barbara Miller, got to safety.Miller is seen training with the tactical team under Lt. Burk. Burk fusses at him a lot in an effort to get him to toughen up. Miller has a chance to be in real combat conditions when he is part of the team to retrieve food supplies from Guantanomo Bay. Miller shoots a member of the insurgent group that attacks Miller's group, which is his first time killing someone. He gets a nod of approval from Burk once the scene was cleared. Back on the ship, Burk sits next to him and offers him potato chips as spoils of war .Miller is approached by Cossetti and O'Connor to join the group that wants to leave the ship due to anxiety about the secrecy of the virus experiment and Lt. Green's subsequent illness (which turned out to be Dengue Fever, which isn't contagious). Miller disagrees with their motives and refuses to leave. He is one of the few crew members that treats Cossetti with any kindness after Cossetti decides to stay and re-enlist. He tells Cossetti that it will take time for the crew to trust him again.Miller was one of the seven crew members who volunteered and were chosen for the human trials of Dr. Scott's cure vaccine. During the trials he grew close to Petty Officer Gibson, and had a bit of a crush on her. When Gibson died during the trials, he told her dead body that her boyfriend (whom she mentioned during the prayer vigil) wouldn't be the only one to miss her. When the Maryland State troopers took the ship hostage in Baltimore, Miller worked with Cruz and O'Connor to get to the armory for weapons and to free the rest of the crew from the troopers who held them captive in the mess hall. He also helped Cruz cover O'Connor with protective gunfire when the latter ran to shoot the Avrocet helicopter out of the sky with the deck gun. Show less «
