CMC Russell Jeter is the senior enlisted man on the USS Nathan James and serves as the liaison between the officers and the enlisted crew. He also serves as the ship's chaplain, holding memorials, performing funerals, and giving spiritual counsel as needed or requested. He offers a listening ear to whomever wants or needs it, and also gives good advice that is often veiled in stories, in informal settings. When he's on the job, he is all business and exudes a calm authority that meshes well with the more forceful personalities of Cmdr. Tom Chandler and XO Michael Slattery.Jeter lost his wife and two daughters in a car accident; he was trying to drive around a slower car and the car flipped. He was the only survivor and spent 82 days in the ICU, where he coded seven times and was brought back seven times. Jeter is a devout Southern Baptist. He told Chandler that God must have had a plan in letting Jeter live when his family died, and in putting him aboard the USS Nathan James; he later volunteers to be a human test subject for the experimental virus and feels this is part of the plan God had for him.Jeter is shot during a standoff between an advance team from the USS James and members of the Maryland State troopers, when they drew guns to keep Chandler, Lt. Burk, and Jeter from entering the Olympia Stadium to look for Chandler's family. He was supposed to be taken back to the ship for medical treatment, unaware that Slattery was being held at gunpoint by Lt. Norris of the Baltimore Police. He opted instead to assist Chandler's father and children while Chandler, Burk and Lt. Green went to confront Amy Granderson. He foraged for medicine at a nearby pharmacy when Chandler's son had a reaction to the cure vaccine. He helped defeat the Avrocet troopers who attacked him and the Chandlers in Baltimore and retrieved Green after the latter escaped from Granderson's troops at the power plant. He met up with the rest of the NJ crew underground and helped get an injured Lt. Alisha Granderson back to the ship.Jeter counsels Lt. Granderson in the aftermath of the Baltimore incident. He helps her deal with her feelings of guilt and perception that the crew blames her for what happened, particularly her bunkmate, Lt. Kara Foster. Jeter was part of the officer trio that swore in Lt. Granderson upon her promotion to full lieutenant after the Baltimore incident. Show less «
