Charlie Pace is the bassist in a one-hit-wonder band called Drive Shaft, which had broken up long before the crash of Oceanic Flight 815. Charlie -- who'd become addicted to heroin as the band gained success and spiraled into a deeper depression and addiction afterward -- was in Australia in hopes of convincing his now-sober brother and Drive Shaft co-founder to rejoin the band. When he was rejected, he immediately bought a ticket to Los Angeles and boarded the fateful flight. Getting shaky without any heroin in mid flight, Charlie went to the bathroom to get a fix and that is where he is when the plane began to plummet. On the island, Charlie is an eager helper and quickly befriends a very pregnant Claire, subsequently serving as a caretaker for Claire and her baby Aaron, and acting as a father figure for the infant. Early on, Charlie is socially aggressive, aiming to make friends with anyone and everyone. People seem to like him just fine, but it's primarily Claire and Hurley who welcome him warmly. Kate remembers Charlie's band and once tells him they were good, but Charlie changes tenses and insists they are good.Despite seemingly having no access to his heroin -- though not for lack of trying -- Charlie discovers that the remoteness of the island isn't a ticket to ignore his demons and must confront them anew, or risk the relationship he values most. He also becomes obsessed with the notion that he's going to die after another person on the island suggests this is the case.
