American Mark Thackeray (Sidney Poitier) recently received his degree in engineering, but cannot find work. To make ends meet, he takes a job as a teacher, only to face a class of rowdy, undisciplined working-class punks.
Incessant Cockney street market vignettes and shots of London buses seem to suggest that it was all primarily intended for American consumption anyway.
The film has gone in and out of fashion, but it's old enough now to return to it with a clear eye, and see the strength beneath the kooky sentimentality.
Generally effective comedy drama with standout performances.

Sentimental reflections on an inspirational teacher are often the makings of weak dishwater films, but in James Clavell's To Sir, with Love, a strong cast and an unforgettable title song make this an undeniable classic.
One factor in the picture's popularity and its sustaining charm is the tuneful title song, which was a top hit for Lulu and is heard throughout the film.
