Ruth Buggs grew up working with her demanding and emotionally abusive father at an RV park in the American Southwest. She developed a disease in her left eye at the age of 4 that left her blind in that eye. As a young adult, she met Graeme Willy and Clive Gollings when they pulled into her RV park for the night. Graeme was immediately taken with her, but Ruth had led (or more correctly, followed) such a sheltered life that she was unaware of Graeme's obvious-to-everyone-else attraction to her.She met Paul, a typical hollywood-style space alien whom Graeme and Clive were secretly trying to help to return home, the next morning when she went to Graeme and Clive's RV to settle their bill. Her equally-hollywood-style christian fundamentalist upbringing had positioned her for a complete meltdown of disillusionment upon being confronted with what she interpreted as concrete and irrefutable evidence that God is not real, there's no Heaven or Hell, no right or wrong, and so forth. All this was accomplished at their first meeting, when Ruth immediately started arguing that Paul couldn't exist and rattled off several tenants of her exaggerated christianity, whereupon an exasperated Paul quickly touched her forehead and copied all his knowledge and experiences into her mind. The newly freed-from-rules Ruth began exploring her new life without the limits she'd always known. Most comically, she stumbled through the linguistic norms of profanity and obscenity, but her progress in this endeavor was quick. Paul also persuaded Ruth to allow him to heal her eye, restoring her to normal vision. She and Paul, who no longer freaked her out, became friends, and he continued to introduce her to more of the less regulated lifestyle that he enjoyed.Ruth and Graeme became better friends as well, and the start of a romance emerged from their partnership through the adversities that so often present themselves to movie characters. Their relationship continued and grew for at least the two years after Paul returned to his home, during which time Graeme and Clive became rather famous in the SF world. Show less «
