Mickey Smith is the sometimes nervous boyfriend of The Doctor's companion, Rose Tyler. His father died when he was young and his mother couldn't cope, so he was raised by his grandmother. His grandmother later slipped on the hall carpet and died, which meant that Rose and her mother Jackie basically are his family.As the series continues, Mickey's and Rose's relationship is strained by Rose's loyalty and devotion to The Doctor, whom she often follows, leaving Mickey behind. In the second season Mickey, chooses to follow Rose and travel in the TARDIS. By chance, the trio's travels takes them to a parallel Earth, where Mickey meets both his grandmother, who in this world is still alive, and his counterpart, Rickey Smith. Rickey dies in the fight to save that world from the following chaos when a scientist creates the destructive Cybermen race. Mickey realises that he can help this Earth by taking Rickey's place in the Cybermen resistance. As Rose and The Doctor leave him, it is understood that the rift between the universes can never be opened again.As Mickey continues to try to save the world from the Cybermen, he and the rest of the Resistance find a way to use a crack in the rift between the universes. The Cybermen also find the rift and use it to invade Rose Tyler's Earth, as do the Daleks, who are also seeking to destroy mankind. The rift has to be closed to stop the invasion, with harsh consequences for Mickey, Rose and her parents.
