Kryten, the loveable mechanoid was created in the year 2340, by the scientist Professor Mamet and manafactured by the company Divadroid International, founded by Jim Reaper. Kryten was programmed as a robotic butler, to serve and obey humans. Kryten became a crewmember aboard the American spacecraft Nova 5 , which crashed on a moon, resulting in the death of the ship's crew. Although the crew had been dead for centuries, Kryten continued to serve their human skeletons, as if they were still alive and in his own time, would settle down and watch the soap opera Androids and dreamed of having his own garden. 3 million years later, the Space Corps mining ship Red Dwarf intercepted a distress signal from the Nova 5, the ship's crew Dave Lister, The Cat and Arnold Rimmer convinced Kryten that his crewmembers were dead for centuries and brought him back to Red Dwarf to begin a new life. Lister encouraged Kryten to break his programming and rebel against Rimmer. Eventually, Kryten rebeled and left Red Dwarf aboard Lister's spacebike and set out to find a planet with a atmosphere and fulfill his dream of growing his own garden. But sometime later, Red Dwarf discovered Kryten's remains on an asteroid, which Kryten crashed Lister's spacebike. Lister had to rebuild Kryten, but could not find his former personailty and Kryten became a permemnent member of the Red Dwarf crew, admiring human behavior and acting as the science officer. Kryten later discovered the terrible truth behind his creation and learnt from a evil rogue simulant, that Professor Mamet had modeled him after bio engineer John Warburton, whom jilted her on the day of their wedding, as her revenge. Kryten has a close friendship with Lister, whom Lister tries to make Kryten more human, more independent and teaching him human behavior and emotions such as lying and insults, by insulting Rimmer and Kryten became jealous of the new member of the crew, an alternate version of Lister's former girlfriend, navigation officer Kristine Kochanski, whom replaced Rimmer, who had left the crew to begin his adventures as his alternate self Ace Rimmer. Kryten was originally played by David Ross in the 1st episode of Series 2 Kryten , but since 1989 - onwards, Kryten has been played by Robert Llewellyn who has made the role his own.
