James Vane is the protective older brother of Sybil Vane in Dorian Gray (movie) and The Picture of Dorian Gray (novel). Little is known about his character in the movie. He dresses smart considering his comparatively impoverished background and is clearly very protective of his sister and is considerably older.SPOILERS AHEAD:Following Sybil's suicide, James immediately blames Dorian Gray, going to Gray's house. He informs Dorian of Sibyl's death and says she was carrying Dorian's child. Vane says Sibyl loved Dorian. A scuffle begins between the two and James attempts to strangle Gray, likely intending to kill him. However, friends of Dorian enter the room, tackle Vane and call the police. One of Dorian's crew restrains Vane, calling him a maniac. Lord Henry informs Gray that Vane will be treated at Broadmoor (an infamous mental asylum) until he settles down .We next see Vane many years later, an insane man, likely homeless, whose life has evidently been destroyed. Gray talks his way out of being shot but drops his cigarette holder, still engraved with his name. Vane now knows he has found Gray again. After attempting to shoot Gray in the street, he chases him onto the Metropolitan Railway (London Underground) at Farringdon Station. An ever unlucky Vane is about to finish Gray but gets hit by a train. His final words were You will die .Differences in the novel:In the novel, James lives with sister Sibyl and their ill mother at a house in Euston Road, London. He is very poor and leaves early in the story to work as a sailor. He later returns and is determined to kill Dorian Gray, blaming him for the death of Sibyl. He stalks Gray and waits for him at a shooting event. Whilst hiding in a bush, Jim is accidentally shot. Gray is relieved to hear of Jims death. It reinforces Gray's belief that he is invulnerable from any repercussions. Show less «
