Dwayne appears to be an angry teenager. He chooses to take a vow of silence until he obtains the goal of becoming a pilot. During the trip Dwayne realizes hes colorblind and therefore begins talking because pilots can not be colorblind. He then begins to express how he sees the family situation and the viewer realizes that he is the most realistic person in the family.Dwayne's view of the world for what it really is. This is sometimes viewed as pessimistic by the rest of the family. He sees through the fluff of the beauty pageant and tries to stop Olive from performing. When Olive ends up performing anyways, Dwayne jumps up on the stage to support his sister and embarrassed himself to protect her. As angry as he is at his family, he still cares a lot about them particularly Olive.Dwayne also acknowledges other family issues such as his parents marriage falling apart and Uncle Franks suicide attempt. At one point he yells to his mother, No, you're not my family! I don't wanna be your family! I hate you fucking people! Divorce? Bankrupt? Suicide? You're fucking losers, you're losers! No, please just leave me here, Mom. Please, please, please. Please... just leave me here. Dwayne is the only character in the movie that recognizes the reality of the situation. The others in the family are ignoring issues, and since he had taken his vow of silence it gave him more time to observe the chaos around him. Show less «
